Materials Works commissioned to design a small addition to Victorian terraced house in Stoke Newington, London. With a limited budget and limited space to build, the challenge is to turn a dark, cramped kitchen space into a bright, open space that will meet the needs of a growing family. To achieve this, an extensive roof lamp was installed above the new addition and the rear wall opened with a large sliding door over the new window seat.
The careful coordination of confined spaces allows for the inclusion of a kitchen island while still leaving room for the dining table. The solid polished concrete floor is offset by the use of natural oak beams to support the roof light and form the window seat, creating an aesthetic that is at once contemporary, practical and welcoming.
